My name is Chelsea Coffey, and I would like to introduce you to our wonderful nonprofit, Mia’s Closet. I thank God everyday for blessing me with a very big vision. In May 2011, I began to actively pursue the concept of a nonprofit that would provide underprivileged girls with free clothing. My original intent was to create a charity after I finished my career; however, a series of stories highlighting children lacking the most basic of essentials prompted me to reach out to co-worker, Patricia Molina, about the idea that would later become Mia’s Closet. Mia’s Closet is forever grateful for Patti’s role in getting Mia’s Closet off the ground, and we have her to thank for tapping into her Spanish background and suggesting the name Mia which means mine in Spanish!
What started out as a very small project, has blossomed into almost four years of not for profit work in the community. We have been amazed by God’s goodness and favor every step of the way. My wonderful parents have supported this dream by allowing our home to be a storage facility and our incredible team of volunteers dedicates countless hours of their time to our mission of building confidence and self-worth in kids k-12. Each participant shops with a personal stylist who offers them a platform to express themselves in a positive way. Our children are in dire need of clothing, emotional support, and constructive planning for the future. It is our goal to provide assistance in these areas at least four times a year via our events.
Due to continued support, we were been able to expand our reach to boys k-12 by creating our subsidiary, Niko’s Locker (Niko’s Locker Store and sports games). We also have a permanent boutique location at Parks Youth Ranch for Homeless Teens, and are in the process of preparing our second permanent location at a school for refugees and nonnative speakers called Las Americas Middle School.
This is just the beginning for Mia’s Closet and we are looking forward to all the opportunities that lie ahead! Feel free to contact us for opportunities to donate clothing, volunteer, or sponsor an event. Mia’s Closet is a community, and we welcome you to join us!
